Son Font: source of happiness

The residential area of Son Font, with its many luxury villas, lies 1.5 kilometres north-east of the village of Calvià. It developed from the former Majorcan estate of the Alabern family, called the Son Font possession. This country estate had close to 150 hectares in the past, and a water source that supplied the municipality of Calvià – the “font” (meaning “spring”) being fed from the Tramuntana mountains. The possession was gradually divided up into different plots here in the south-west of Majorca, and it became an “urbanización” or development.

Surrounded by nature

This was much to the delight of property buyers, who could now build their villas in this exceptional location in the hills of Son Font, surrounded by pine forests. The owners of these magnificent country houses are really fortunate. They have the privilege of enjoying views of the deep blue Mediterranean as well as the mountains of the Sierra de Tramuntana from their own homes. In short, Son Font is a really special location to have a property in Majorca.

Affluent area

The development is part of the municipality of Calvià, the main place being the village of the same name, which is where you’ll find the town hall administration. Calvià is one of the largest and richest municipalities in Majorca. It’s 30 kilometres or so from Son Font to the Airport of Palma de Mallorca and you can cover it in about half an hour by car. It takes 15 to 20 minutes to get to the long beaches in Palmanova or Santa Ponça, for example, and spread out your beach towel on the sand or one of the waiting sun loungers.

Soak up the harbour atmosphere

Should you be in the mood for strolling around the exclusive marina in Puerto Portals and some fine dining, that’s easy too. You can be there in quarter of an hour or so, ambling past multimillion euro yachts with gleaming chrome, perhaps stopping to dine in a restaurant – such as the casual Flanigan, the sushi restaurant Tahini or maybe Baiben, one of Michelin-starred maestro Fernando P. Arellano’s restaurants.

Excursion promising amazing views

The area of Son Font is also an excellent starting point for mountain bike trips or extensive hikes through an untouched, natural landscape. If you want an easy, family-friendly walking excursion that literally promises amazing views, there is a route providing a round trip of about nine kilometres, from Son Font to the mountain village of Galilea and back. You’ll pass holm oaks, wild pistachio shrubs, grazing sheep, climbing goats

Equestrian sports and golf

The trail gives you clear views of mountains too, such as the Mola de s’Esclop at 928 metres and the Galatzó with an altitude of 1,027 metres. Son Font is also an El Dorado for anyone who loves horses. Wealthy equestrian fans have realised this and keep their own horses here on their fincas. Now, what about when you feel like a little round of golf? You have a choice of Santa Ponça I, II, III, Bendinat or the nearby T Golf & Country Club. And the children of foreign residents are well catered for with a number of international schools, among others, the King Richard III College and the Agora Portals International School in Portals Nous.
