Beach bliss in Illetes

It’s a little place with a lot of beach. Playa de Illetes, Playa Comtessa and Cala Xinxell are all part of Illetes in the south-west of Majorca. These three playas offer pure beach bliss for families with children. The sand is fine, the water is crystal clear and it’s lovely and shallow at the shore. Some amateur captains may like to rent pedal boats and explore the bay under their own muscle power. Where there are beaches, then, you’ll find beach clubs not far away. Illetes – also called Ses Illetes or Illetas – lays on two beach clubs, each competing with the other to be more stylish. On the main beach of Playa de Illetes, the Balneario Illetes has been all spruced up. Along with classy sun loungers and parasols, it also has a fashion boutique, restaurant and bar. If you’re longing for a sports massage, relaxing massage or some foot reflexology, you can let yourself be pampered by the crew from the Bodhana Wellness Centre. Relaxation right on the beach…

Oases by the sea

The other beach club is called Purobeach Illetas, and it’s the counterpart of Purobeach Palma in Cala Estancia, south-east of Majorca’s capital. This “oasis by the sea” provides sun loungers, Balinese beds and yoga. It also offers culinary treats in the form of light Mediterranean-Asian cuisine as well as delicious drinks. Perhaps you’d like to try one of their flamboyantly-coloured cocktails? The bright red “Cosmopolitan”, for instance, or maybe the fresh green “Mint Smoothie”? If you visit, anyway, you’ll see that the atmosphere here makes it easy for you to switch off and momentarily forget entirely about the world around you…

Hillside locations guarantee sea views

Illetes is about ten kilometres from Palma de Mallorca and is part of the municipality of Calvià. It is also highly sought after by foreign residents. No wonder, because the hillside locations in Illetes mean that the properties very often have enchanting sea views. And there are international schools close by. Obviously, this place has a lot going on in summer because of the beaches, but then in winter, peace and quiet sets in all the more. The little shopping area on the main street, Carretera Andratx, has a supermarket, a fashion shop, a gift shop, a shop for beach paraphernalia and cafés. There are also some shops a little further along and all of these businesses are open all year round. If you want more exclusive options, Puerto Portals is just three kilometres away. It’s not far to Palma either, for when you need a major shopping spree or window-shopping trip. And, needless to say, both of these are wonderful places for going out

Enjoying the good life, diving, golf

If you drive into Illetes, the one-way-system ensures that you can complete a sightseeing tour on Passeig Illetes. You’ll pass by an array of hotels that have direct access to the sea, such as the family-run Bonsol, the plush five-star Gran Meliá del Mar with its beautiful, large garden and tables by the water, and the Bonanza. This latter hotel will be of particular interest to you if you’re a diver– or you’d like to be – as it’s where West Coast Divers is based. There are qualified instructors to accompany underwater explorers at all times, whether it’s to induct beginners into the mysteries of diving or take experienced divers on adventure tours to shipwrecks in the area or to the caves of Porto Pí. Golfers have three courses in Palma to choose from, or they could opt for the course in nearby Bendinat.
